How I use my Palm

By Jeroen van Nieuwenhuizen

After hardly using my Palm m100 for a year or so. I recently started using my Palm more and more. One of the reasons for this is that I have more and more things to do which make it easy to forget one, putting these in my palm avoids nasty surprises This page gives an overview how I am using my palm nowadays.

Appointments and Todo's

One of the problems I had when using my palm in the past was that I normally do not have much fixed appointments, but a lot of todo's with a relative time limit. That was one of the reasons using the default datebook did not work. But then someone pointed me to DateBk3, which has the option of floating appointments. This was exactly the thing I have been looking for for years that finally turned my Palm in a very useful item.

After a while however I noticed that I started to see to much things as floating appointments, which makes this feature in fact less useful. So I changed the definition of how to use them. Floating appointments are task without a specific end date. Todo's have to be finished before a specific day.

Database

I manage a set of webservers for my work so I have a database with IPs related to servers in my Palm which makes it easy to move IP numbers from one server to another when ever necessary. Because my Palm m100 is one of the two things I have always with me (my mobile phone being the other) I can do this from almost every location with an Internet connection.

Notepad

I normally have good ideas when sleeping, suddenly waking up. This is why I always have my palm next to my bed. Making it easy to quickly write down the idea and go back sleeping. It looks normal to use notepad for that purpose however when you know my writing style you know how unreadable I write. Hence I have the notepad hard button pointing to memo. Combined with GraffitiAnywhere this makes it still very easy to quickly write a note.

Yaps

Yasp (Yet another password store) is one of the applications I use. Having over 100 accounts around the Internet it has become impossible for me to remember all passwords. Yaps enables to use a master password to get access to a encrypted database which stores these passwords.

In short

Using a palm makes it easier for me to remember tasks and get them completed. It also makes it easier to remember ideas when they pop up in my mind, and last but not least a palm gives me the information I might need on unexpected occasions.
